Aviation Day 2013On Saturday, March 2, 2013 Chapter 99 hosted their eleventh annual Aviation Day at Vero Beach Airport. The weather did not quite cooperate: mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Windy, with the wind blowing at 15 to 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. About 2600 visitors dressed warm and came out. Headlining the Aviation Day event for 2013 was the Flagship Detroit, a 1937 Douglas DC-3 restored to her former American Airlines glory. Operated by the Flagship Detroit Foundation, the DC-3 was available for tours and was a very popular attraction. Skyhawk Ventures returned with their restored Douglas A-4C Skyhawk Navy attack aircraft. Other warbirds showcased included a Beech T-34, a Socata Epsilon French military trainer, a North American T-28 and an Aero L-39 high-performance jet trainer. T-28 pilot Mick Thorensten performed several fly-bys, as did the Retro Flight Warbird Formation Demonstration Team New production aircraft on display included Piper, Mooney, and GippsAero Airvan aircraft. Several EAA Chapter 99 members brought their aircraft to the event, including RV-9A and Barracuda amateur-built aircraft, Piper Cub and Cessna 120, 140, 172, 190, and DeHavilland Tiger Moth classics. In spite of the weather, 35 aircraft were on display, and the biplane and helicopter rides were kept busy all day.
