Merrit Badge 2006

Approximately 150 Boy Scouts from troops located in Indian River County held a three day camporee on Vero Beach Airport October 20, 21 & 22. The principal activity was for the scouts to work on their Aviation Merit Badge. EAA Chapters in the area were asked to provide facilities and personal. Chapter 99 was the host chapter and put the event together. Three pilots and two ground crews from Chapter 203 North Palm Beach also participated. Responsible members from Chapter 99 were Marty, who did his usual great job of teaching aerodynamics and flight on the simulator. Keith G. with the help of Jim M., a student from Flight Safety gave ground and navigation instruction in two Flight Safety classrooms. Don K. demonstrated aircraft construction on John´s Zenair 701 project. Mike D. and Rick kept things safely moving outside while Landis and Bill P. officiated inside. Rick and Bill P. were from Chapter 203.

The highlight of the event for 83 scouts were the Young Eagles flights. For many of them it was their first flight in an airplane. The pilots from Chapter 99 were Jim D., David J., Ken M., Bill R. and Bill Z. Pilots from Chapter 203 were Torrey E., Bruce H. and Dick W.
Many thanks to all who participated. The scout leaders were very pleased with it all and expressed a deep appreciation to both chapters.
